Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
We applaud any effort that brings attention to people with developmental disabilities of all kinds. But this reminds us that people with severe autism make up only a small fraction (15%) of the developmentally disabled population... and often a less visible and less included fraction.
It is important to note that in addition March is Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month, Brain Injury Awareness Month, Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Hepatitis C Awareness Month, Multiple System Atrophy Awareness Month, Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month, Triple Negative Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Multiple Sclerosis Education and Awareness Month and more.
All good and worthy causes. But when we go to Trenton or Washington to advocate for resources our loved ones desperately need, we are sitting in the same rooms as people from all these other worthy causes.
That is why NCSAutism-NJ is so important. We are working to give our community a louder, stronger voice. And when we speak, we do so with only one goal -- helping the severe autism community here in NJ.
